Efficient cooling and airflow, and a discreet visual appearance

Efficient cooling and airflow, and a discreet visual appearance

The use of A11 ceiling sails and VENTAMIC creates a full-surface hybrid solution that integrates with the building mass, supporting an efficient energy strategy.

The challenge was clear: energy-efficiency, indoor climate and aesthetics

The office building at Talstrasse 41 in Zurich, Switzerland, is located centrally downtown, close to the lake of Zurich.

The building had not been remodelled for many years, and extensive modernisation was required. When the project planning began, clear requirements were set for a high-quality indoor climate solution that would meet both energy efficiency targets and align with the building’s aesthetic characteristics.

With those requests at hand, particular attention was given to achieving effective cooling and efficient air flow, combined with a discreet visual appearance.

The requirements were met with climate ceilings from Swegon

A solution based on closed A11-C climate ceilings and a VENTAMIC hybrid system, was selected. This approach offers high heating and cooling performance alongside integrated supply air. In addition, this solution is both silent and nearly invisible in the indoor environment.

All floors were given a consistent ceiling appearance thanks to the selected HVAC solution, and it is visually in line with the existing characteristics of the building. That way, the climate ceiling solution almost seem to be invisible.

Building mass energy for efficient heating and cooling

The use of the full-surface VENTAMIC hybrid solution enables effective integration of the building mass into the overall energy strategy.

The system provides a cooling capacity of up to 119 W/m2 at a temperature differential of 8 K and a heating capacity of up to 104 W/m2 at a temperature differential of 15 K, demonstrating extraordinary technological abilities.  Its acoustic performance reaches a sound absorption coefficient of up to αw 0.90, equivalent to sound absorption class A. Depending on the design, the solution delivers an air volume of up to 80 m³/h per linear metre of supply air outlet, maintaining a sound pressure level below 38 dB.

Freecooling for further energy-efficiency

Despite the solution’s high performance, the installation height remains very compact at 250 millimetres. During the night, the solution can operate in free cooling mode and extract the temporarily stored heat energy from the building mass, thus preparing it for the next day.

The result

This climate ceiling solution provides a comfortable indoor climate for everyone in the building throughout the entire year, both hot summer and cold winters, while maintaining an efficient energy use in its operation.
