Optimisation of water temperature

SMARTLink+ is an optimisation function for temperature control of solution with multiple GOLD units and chiller/heat pumps. The precise water temperature management and streamlined TCP/IP connections saves operational energy.

Main functionality

The SMARTLink+ and chiller/heat pump function for the GOLD air handling unit provides optimised heating and cooling control. It is used for one or more AHUs that are paired with up to four chillers or heat pumps and supports multiple heating and cooling functions. Each GOLD unit indicates a temperature demand, the chiller/heat pump adjusts its operation to the highest/lowest demand and ensures that at least one valve remains open, this to save energy.

The installation is easy thanks to a TCP/IP connection and seamless integration with GOLD IQ-logic and IQ-navigator.

Added value

  • All control functions for hydronic heating and cooling are available.
  • May be combined with up to 10 GOLD air handling units, connected to up to 4 chillers/heat pumps.
  • Water optimization based on an actual need saves energy, approx.  2-3% per Kelvin degree. This allows for the coil valve to be as open as possible at all times.
  • Supports easy connection with TCP/IP cable between AHU and chiller/heat-pump.
  • Main controls in GOLD IQ-logic and IQ-Navigator.

Description

The flow chart shows schematics of the SMARTLink+ and chiller/heat pump function. This is how it works:

  1. Each GOLD air handling unit ensures the supply air temperature demand by controlling all connected 3-way valves and pumps to respective coils; heating, cooling or reversible.
  2. Each GOLD units’ SMARTLink+ detects the position of connected valves and ensures the highest/lowest required water temperature to the chiller/heat pump/multifunctional unit.
  3. The chiller/heat pump/multifunctional unit receives input from all connected GOLD units (max 10) and supplies water of a temperature equal to the one air handling unit with the highest temperature demand.
  4. To combine coils from different units, but with equal demands, all included chillers/heat pumps/multifunctional units may be connected from each GOLD unit separately.

Technical details

  • Each GOLD unit has a set water temperature for heating (30°C) and for cooling (12°C).
  • The cooling/heating unit have a reference temperature sensor and measures/adjusts/maintains the required water temperature.
  • SMARTLink+ in GOLD air handling units uses the current actual reference temperature and adjust the setpoint if necessary and sends a new temperature to keep all connected valves at a 70-90% open position.
  • The valve that requires the highest temperature will determine the reference temperature. Remaining valves will adapt to a more closed position.
